Sale of Dragster Autographed by the 2002 New York Yankees to Benefit the Darrell Gwynn Foundation

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, December 24, 2002 – Darrell Gwynn’s Top Fuel dragster display car signed by members of the 2002 New York Yankees baseball team and coaching staff will be auctioned No Reserve at the 2003 Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, a research-based organization that exists to prevent, provide for and ultimately cure spinal cord injuries and other debilitating diseases.

Under New York Yankees sponsorship since 2000, Gwynn Racing team has fielded a series of National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) POWERade Series Top Fuel dragsters bearing the famed intertwined ‘NY’ logo and pin-stripes of baseball’s 26-time world champion ‘Bronx Bombers’. In that time, the team has won multiple national events and set numerous track records. This past February, driver Andrew Cowin recorded a 4.490-second pass in the Yankees-sponsored dragster – the quickest run by any driver and team in 2002.

The signed dragster for auction bid bears the race team’s 2000-2001 Yankees paint scheme, with its windscreen bearing the autographs of a collection of 2002 season ballplayers and coaches. Darrell Gwynn began his racing career in 1980 as a 19-year-old and quickly became a competitive racing force. During his 10-year driving career, Gwynn recorded 28 wins – 18 in Top Fuel and 10 in Top Alcohol Dragster. His long list of national titles, records broken and impressive statistics have established him as a legend within the world of drag racing.

However, Gwynn’s career was cut tragically short on Easter Sunday 1990 in England. During an exhibition run, the chassis on his dragster broke in half, sending the car hurling into the retaining wall. The accident paralyzed Gwynn from the chest down and required amputation of his left arm at the elbow. Despite the tragedy, Gwynn’s love for the sport couldn’t be swayed. He and his father Jerry, both NHRA champions, have lead the Darrell Gwynn Racing team to 15 victories since 1990. In 2001, Gwynn was voted one of NHRA’s ‘50 Greatest Drivers’, and in 2002 he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame.

During his racing career, Gwynn adopted the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis as his charity of choice. The Miami Project became an integral source of personal support shortly after Gwynn’s accident, as he and his family adjusted to his new way of life. As a result of the Miami Project’s influence upon Gwynn and his desire to further aid the effort to cure paralysis, he established his own organization - the Darrell Gwynn Foundation.

The Foundation has created a series of educational tools and teaching aids specifically to educate children about the importance of safety and injury prevention. It also helps improve the quality of life for those already afflicted with injury or illness by providing necessary equipment or special services. Furthermore, to expedite specific cures, the Foundation assists in the funding of targeted research.
