HOMESTEAD, FL,(November 14, 2003), "The fish were biting and plentiful on a beautiful Friday morning at the 2nd Annual NASCAR Winston Cup Drivers Hot Rods & Reels" Charity Fishing Tournament, held at the Homestead-Miami Speedway's infield lake. The event kicked off festivities at the Ford Championship Weekend, and raised money for The Darrell Gwynn Foundation to Cure Paralysis, and the Betty Jane France Pediatric Center, Speediatrics, at Homestead Hospital

Driver Johnny Benson collected a win off the track with his boat claiming the tournament championship. Benson, along with fishing guide Allen Duke and eBay auction winners Skip Pletzer and Tony Crowder, both of Florida, reeled in a peacock bass and a largemouth bass totaling 8.59 lbs. Second place went to NASCAR legend Donnie Allison and boat guide Billy Bob, with a total weight of 5.35 lbs. Participants fished on the Speedway's 18-acre infield lake which is 60 feet deep and stocked with rare peacock bass as well as largemouth bass. It has been featured on ESPN's "Great Outdoors" as well as in the Miami Herald.

Fifteen NASCAR Winston Cup drivers were put up for auction on Foxsports.com, presented by eBay and fans will had the chance to bid on the opportunity to go bass fishing with them at the Hot Rods & Reels event. Defending NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Tony Stewart and fellow drivers Jimmy Spencer, Ken Schrader, Kyle Petty, Ricky Craven, Dave Blaney, Robby Gordon, Bobby Labonte, Ward Burton, Kurt Busch, Michael Waltrip, Jeremy Mayfield, tournament winner Benson, plus legendary team owner Richard Childress, three-time NASCAR Winston Cup winner and current FOX Sports broadcaster Darrell Waltrip, co-broadcaster Jeff Hammond and NASCAR legend Donnie Allison all participated in the fishing tournament.

The Darrell Gwynn Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to prevent, provide for and ultimately cure spinal cord injuries and other debilitating illnesses. To expedite specific cures, the Foundation assists in the funding of targeted research.

The Betty Jane France Pediatric Center, Speediatrics, at Homestead Hospital is a completely renovated 14-bed pediatrics unit designed with a motorsports theme. The only dedicated pediatric unit in deep South Miami-Dade, its design is to make children feel as comfortable as possible during a hospital stay.
