November 16th, 2011

POMONA, Calif. – Donors of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation donated a $17,000 custom power wheelchair to Alvin Jackson-Belles of Huntington Beach, Calif. at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif. during the NHRA Finals on Sunday, November 13.

Alvin was born in Liberia and at the age of 11 he was in a car accident.  He was able to walk away from the scene of the accident, but later became paralyzed.  The inadequate healthcare provided in Liberia led to him having life threatening bed sores and infections.  His story was placed on the Arcs of Hope website and he was then adopted by a family in the United States, spending the next 16 months of his life in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and a nursing home.  He was then adopted by a new family in California to become part of a family with 59 other boys. His current wheelchair is a second hand chair and he has outgrown it, and it is especially difficult for him to maneuver at school.

The Darrell Gwynn Foundation donated a $17,000 custom-built manual wheelchair with power assist wheels to Alvin on Sunday, November 13, 2011. The new wheelchair will allow Alvin to now move freely as an active teenager, as his previous wheelchair wouldn’t allow him to do so. His insurance wouldn’t cover the cost of a new chair so the Darrell Gwynn Foundation came in to save the day!  The wheelchair will provide Alvin with a much higher quality of life!
