Clint Bowyer Wins Hot Rods & Reels…Sort of; Jamie McMurray Top Driver Fisherman Present, February 21

RalphNotaro21022014DGF-HR&R Daytona 2014101DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –– The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, on behalf of its donors and supporters, donated a brand new $19,000 custom power wheelchair to 10 year-old and Oviedo, Florida native Giannely Rosa at the 15th Annual Hot Rods & Reels Charity Fishing Tournament with NASCAR Drivers on Lake Lloyd at the Daytona International Speedway on Friday, February 21. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.

“It’s always a special thing when we can donate a wheelchair to help a child like Giannely, said Darrell Gwynn, president of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. “Hot Rods & Reels is a great event that is a staple of Speedweek here in Daytona. It has lots of room to grow with plenty sponsorships and boat sales available. We’re hoping to get more partners involved so we can continue helping people like the Rosa family.”

Giannely is diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and arthogryposis. She had outgrown her old wheelchair, which was not designed properly for her. Medicaid denied her request for a new, better fitting, wheelchair. Giannely is an extremely active 10 year-old girl. She enjoys swimming, dancing, drawing, playing video games and being outside. With this new wheelchair donation from the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, her goals are to attend art school and become an artist, become a singer and to attend a ballet school for girls with disabilities. She also would like to play sports like wheelchair soccer.

A shy, but adorable, Giannelly offered a soft, but unmistakable “thank you” to all the attendees at the event who supported her wheelchair donation.

A fishing team captained by Clint Bowyer consisting of James Lancaster, Austin Lancaster and Brett Jackson won the 15th annual Hot Rods & Reels™ Charity Fishing Tournament with NASCAR Drivers on Lake Lloyd at the Daytona International Speedway on Friday, February 21. The event pairs NASCAR Drivers with foundation supporters, executives and racing fans for a day of exciting fishing during the Daytona 500 Weekend in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Although his team won the title with a winning combined weight of 10.92lbs. bass, Bowyer did not participate in the event. Bowyer, a mainstay at the event, was banged up in a racing incident the night before during the Budweiser Duels. Bowyer is in good health and his team carried on without him and won the title.

“So, Clint doesn’t show up, and his team wins the fishing tournament? I guess that should tell us about Clint’s value to the team (laughs),” said a joking Darrell Gwynn, president of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation.

Jamie McMurray, coming off his Hot Rods & Reels – Homestead victory in November 2013, was the top driver who participated in the event. His team consisting of  George McNeilly and Travis and Zaccari Annarumma netted a total of 10.88lbs. of bass. RalphNotaro21022014DGF-HR&R Daytona 2014104RalphNotaro21022014DGF-HR&R Daytona 2014104

“I wanted to defend my title, and I had a great team today,” said McMurray. “Everyone on the boat contributed. It’s great to be a part of this event and support Darrell and what he’s doing here to help kids get the wheelchairs they need.”

Several NASCAR Drivers including Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex, David Ragan, Kyle Larson, Dave Blaney, David Gilliand, Donnie Allison and Justin Allison participated in the event.

Sponsors who made the event possible include: Bass Pro Shops-Outdoor World, Keller Boats, Club 3, Jegs, Sprint, Hook & Tackle, World Fishing Network, Bass Online, NASCAR Foundation, Halifax Hospital, Florida Wildlife Foundation and Plano.
