LAS VEGAS – The Davie, Fla. based Darrell Gwynn Foundation and Davie resident David Cowheard both traveled across the country to Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas last weekend to attend the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Car Collector Auction. In hindsight, both could have probably met in Davie for a transaction that took place on stage live on national television. Cowheard purchased the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s 1971 Plymouth “Barrett-Cuda” Tribute Car at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas for $200,000 on Friday, September 23 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. All proceeds from the sale of the car, built by Pure Power Motorsports to commemorate Barrett-Jacksons 40th Anniversary, will benefit the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.

“I first learned about the Darrell Gwynn Foundation when I saw the story of Darrell driving the electric dragster for charity with the joystick control,” said Cowheard. “He’s an amazing guy and the organization and its wheelchair donations are special. I didn’t come here to buy the car, but after seeing it on stage I decided to buy it and help the foundation. I think my dad was pretty shocked (laughs). He was watching on TV and saw me buying the car. We’re all excited.”

“A lot of people are going to be helped thanks to David,” said Ryan Rogers, Marketing & Communications Director or the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. “Basically, David just donated eight power wheelchairs, which cost an average of $25,000 each, to those in need. That’s an amazing contribution. We were amazed to learn the buyer was also from Davie where our offices are. That’s what makes South Florida a special place.”

The car was built by longtime Darrell Gwynn Foundation supporters Mike Langston and Dick Koch of Pure Power Motorsports and donated for auction at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas. The car is a 1-of-1 special edition, Grand Touring type model, with a new Hemi engine, widened rear quarters and painted in Barrett-Jackson’s colors. The 1971 Plymouth Barracuda was donated by Scott Milestone and the 572 Hemi Engine was donated by Tom & Cindy Wright, discounted by Mopar and built by Gary Stanton.

The Darrell Gwynn Fundation also donated a $9,000 wheelchair to four year-old Camron Vaughn on stage at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas. The wheelchair donation was made through the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s national Wheelchair Donation Program.

About the Darrell Gwynn Foundation

Founded in 2002 by Champion Racer Darrell Gwynn and his wife, Lisa, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to provide SUPPORT for people living with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries. The foundation’s primary support program is its national Wheelchair Donation Program. With this program the Darrell Gwynn Foundation has donated custom built wheelchairs to hundreds of individuals in need. The foundation also maintains a Patient Assistance Fund offering support services and tools at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado with aspirations to expand this model to several hospitals nationwide. The Patient Assistance Fund also supports the Betty Jane France Pediatric Center, at Halifax Hospital in Daytona, Fla. and Homestead Hospital in Homestead, Fla. Additionally, the Patient Assistance Fund provides financial support through its Fast Track Laboratory with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis aimed at finding a cure for paralysis. The foundation operates an Education & Prevention Program directed to high school students to educate them on the dangers of risky behavior that can lead to spinal cord injuries. This rapidly growing program reaches over 10,000 students annually at over 50 high schools. In an effort to create more awareness about spinal cord injuries, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation successfully lobbied for an established Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week with a resolution passed by the Florida Legislature in 2006. With tremendous fundraising partners such as Barrett-Jackson, the NHRA, NASCAR, Rolltisserie and many more generous sponsors, individual supporters and donors, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation continues to evolve as a leading foundation for those with spinal cord injuries.
