Darrell Gwynn Strikes Back and Wins Race 2 over Don Garlits; Sets Up Sunday Showdown at NHRA Supernationals

June 4th, 2011

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. – Darrell Gwynn struck back and pulled off a win over Don Garlits in Race 2 of the “Garlits vs. Gwynn: Match Races for a Cause” at the NHRA Supernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown on Saturday, June 4. The two legends of drag racing are squaring off in this racing series to raise awareness and money for the Darrell Gwynn Foundation and Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, Inc. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide AWARENESS, PREVENTION, SUPPORT and ultimately a CURE for Paralysis.

“It feels great to beat ‘Big Daddy’,” said an elated Gwynn after his Race 2 victory. “It’s exciting for the fans cause it sets up a winner takes all race tomorrow.”

What cost Gwynn the race yesterday versus Garlits is what proved to be the difference in today’s race victory. After getting a slow start off the line yesterday and never being able to recover, Gwynn got an excellent start off the line today accelerating to a commanding early lead. Gwynn led by half-a-car-length at the midway point of the race. Garlits closed the gap down the stretch but was not able to catch “The Kid”. Gwynn crossed the finish line in 31.20 seconds while Garlits followed finishing at 31.50.

The win by Gwynn evens the match races at one apiece as they enter tomorrow’s Race 3 for the NHRA Supernationals crown.  Garlits won Race 1 yesterday over Gwynn with a time of 30.76. Overall Garlits still holds a 3-2 lead over Gwynn in match races and 1-0 series lead after winning two-of-three races in Gainesville. But Gwynn can even the score in both the series and match races by winning Sunday’s finale in Englishtown. Race 3 is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. at the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Prior to tomorrow’s Race 3 the Darrell Gwynn Foundation will donate a custom-built $36,000 wheelchair to Bronx,N.Y. native Jonathn Gonzalez at approximately 10:30 a.m. with a special ceremony on the racetrack. The donation is being made through the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s Wheelchair Donation Program. Fans can support the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission and help other individuals in need of new wheelchairs by purchasing posters for a $20 donation at the starting line prior to the NHRA’s Track Walk at 9:45 a.m.

The Darrell Gwynn Foundation compound is setup behind the grandstands at the NHRA Supernationals. There fans can support the foundation’s mission by purchasing commemorative “Garlits vs. Gwynn: Match Races for a Cause” posters for a $20 donation. Fans can also participate in the foundation’s “Give the Gift of Mobility” campaign by making donations toward the purchase of various parts of a custom wheelchair ranging from $50 – $25,000.
