Foundation’s Wheelchair Donation Program Seeks to Help Individuals Facing Financial & Medical Hardships Who Are Unable to Obtain a Proper Wheelchair

DAVIE, Fla. – The Darrell Gwynn Foundation is seeking individuals in Southern California in need of a new life-changing wheelchair. The foundation operates a Wheelchair Donation Program which provides custom-built new wheelchairs for young individuals whom are disabled and are in desperate need of a new wheelchair. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide AWARENESS, PREVENTION, SUPPORT or ultimately a CURE for Paralysis.

The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s Wheelchair Donation Program has been providing customized wheelchairs to children and young adults in need across the country since 2002. The program was started to fulfill the foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life for those afflicted with paralysis from injury or illness. This is a national wheelchair donation program. The cost of a new chair can be alarmingly expensive and coupled with the other numerous costs associated with spinal cord injuries and debilitating diseases, it can be troublesome to purchase a new wheelchair. The foundation works closely with wheelchair recipients’ doctors and physical therapists to custom fit the wheelchair to meet the patient’s needs.

In order to be eligible to receive a custom-built brand new wheelchair from the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, a potential recipient must demonstrate:

  • A medical need and financial hardship.
  • Have lived with their injury or illness for at least six months.
  • They are permanently confined to a wheelchair.
  • They have exhausted all other resources available to them to obtain a wheelchair which may include a previous insurance denial, lack of adequate insurance, etc.

The Darrell Gwynn Foundation hopes to identify two eligible recipients from the area for new wheelchairs and make the donations at fundraising events taking place in Southern California in 2011. The foundation’s wheelchair donation program is a national program and the foundation strives to find local recipients when making wheelchair donations at fundraising events.

To apply for a wheelchair from the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s Wheelchair Donation Program recipients, their parents or physicians can visit www.darrellgwynnfoundation.org or call Erica Woods at (954) 792-7223 x.112.

About the Darrell Gwynn Foundation

Founded in 2002 by Champion Drag Racer Darrell Gwynn and his wife Lisa, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to provide AWARENESS, PREVENTION, SUPPORT and ultimately a CURE for paralysis. In an effort to create more awareness about spinal cord injuries, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation successfully lobbied for an established Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week with a resolution passed by the Florida Legislature in 2006. The foundation operates an Education & Prevention Program directed to high school students to educate them on the dangers of risky behavior that can lead to spinal cord injuries. This rapidly growing program reaches over 10,000 students annually at over 50 high schools. The foundation’s primary support program is its national Wheelchair Donation Program. With this program the Darrell Gwynn Foundation has donated custom built wheelchairs to hundreds of individuals in need. The foundation also maintains a model Patient Assistance Fund offering support services and tools at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado with aspirations to expand this model to several hospitals nationwide. The Paralyzed Assistance Fund also supports the Betty Jane France Pediatric Center, at Halifax Hospital in Daytona, Fla. and Homestead Hospital in Homestead, Fla. Additionally the foundation provides financial support through its Fast Track Laboratory with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis aimed at finding a cure for paralysis. With tremendous fundraising partners such as Barrett-Jackson, the NHRA, NASCAR and many more generous sponsors, individual supporters and donors, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation continues to evolve as a leading foundation for those with spinal cord injuries.
