Foundation to Expand Spinal Cord Injury Prevention Efforts

DAVIE, FL, September 16, 2014 – The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, a South Florida-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support for people living with paralysis and preventing spinal cord injuries, was awarded a $10,500 grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida. This grant will support the foundation’s Education & Prevention Program, which reaches over 10,000 South Florida high school students annually by encouraging them to think twice before making destructive decisions and engaging in risky behaviors including distracted driving; impaired driving; not wearing seatbelts; diving into shallow water; playing with guns and reckless horseplay, in order to raise awareness about and prevent spinal cord injuries.

According to estimates by the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, more than 12,000 individuals sustain a spinal cord injury each year. Because the highest per capita rate of injury occurs between ages 16 and 30, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s Education & Prevention Program is designed to be presented in high schools throughout South Florida in order to educate students about how to prevent such injuries. With grant funds received from Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation will be able to continue providing this vital, life-saving program to high school students in South Florida.

About the Darrell Gwynn Foundation

Founded in 2002 by Champion Racer Darrell Gwynn and his wife, Lisa, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to provide SUPPORT for people living with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries. The foundation’s primary support program is its national Wheelchair Donation Program. With this program the Darrell Gwynn Foundation has donated custom built wheelchairs to hundreds of individuals in need facing medical and financial hardships. The foundation operates an Education & Prevention Program directed to high school students to educate them on the dangers of risky behavior that can lead to spinal cord injuries. This rapidly growing program reaches over 10,000 students annually at over 50 high schools. In an effort to create more awareness about spinal cord injuries, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation successfully lobbied for and established a National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month and Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week in Florida.
