- Darrell Gwynn is a former
National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) world champion who, while
participating in an exhibition event in England in 1990, suffered a
devastating spinal cord injury that caused permanent paralysis. Darrell and his wife Lisa donated a
great deal of time and money for the fight to cure paralysis, through a
relationship with The Miami
Project to Cure Paralysis that ironically preceded Darrell’s accident. While doing this work, the Gwynns
recognized that individuals living with spinal cord injuries were not
receiving a number of critical services and were often being denied a
quality of life. They decided to
create their own foundation to address these needs. Also, the Gwynns wanted to raise
awareness about the causes and effects of spinal cord injuries, as well
as provide young people critical prevention-focused education.

- Over the past five years, the
DGF has grown tremendously. What
began with just one fundraising event and a few wheelchair donations has
turned into a national high-profile organization helping many disabled
individuals and attracting the support of prominent individuals and
organizations. Among current DGF
board of directors is four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon, two-time
NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, NASCAR team owner and NFL head coach Joe
Gibbs, and Oakley founder Jim Jannard.
We are an official charity of the NHRA and Barrett-Jackson (the
world’s largest car auction) and have relationships with NASCAR, The
Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Easter Seals, Homestead-Miami Speedway,
Daytona International Speedway, The Florida Department of Health and
DHL, among others.

- DGF created and implemented
Florida Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week (FSCIAW) with the gracious
assistance of Senator Nan Rich (D-Weston) and Representative Rene Garcia
(R-Hialeah). The campaign is
focused on educating Floridians on how they can prevent spinal cord
injuries, as well as increasing their awareness on how their life could
change if they do suffer a spinal cord injury. It is our mission to
reduce the number of paralyzing accidents in the state each year through
heightening Floridians’ education and awareness.
